When Periyaswamy swamigal travels, a piece of cloth always flies over his heads to give him shadow. This cloth prevents him from sunlight. It’s called as “Melkatti”. By time, it changed as “Mekkatti”. To remember this, the devotees tie mekkati (cloth) during the Sithirai and Thai carnival.
